Our missionThe 3D-LightTrans low-cost manufacturing chain will make textile reinforced composites affordable for mass production of components, fulfilling increasing requirements on performance, light weight and added value of the final product in all market sectors.

Economic impact

The 3D-LightTrans manufacturing chain will lead to substantial process savings in cost efficient manufacturing of textile reinforced polymer composites with reasonable investment costs, enabled by the following key factors:

 

• highly efficient 3D-weaving of integral parts with complex geometry in one shot

• increased flexibility for draping and fixation in or out of the forming tool, with uncomplicated storage and transport conditions

• final part consolidation by means of an extremely lean thermoforming process on hybrid fabric

3D-LightTrans technology will not only reduce the costs, but also lead to an enormous increase in the process and product quality thanks to the higher reproducibility and use of know-how based manufacturing, with intensive use of modelling and simulation techniques. Furthermore, by overcoming current limitations in the realization of parts with complex geometries and tailored material properties, the improvement of existing and manufacturing of new multifunctional products with increased added value will be also made possible.

 

3D-LightTrans will provide the OEMs with a competitive edge in the automated and robust manufacturing of higher volumes of customised end products for automotive, medical applications, light weight structures, etc., paving the way to a massive introduction of textile reinforced composite components in substitution of metals parts. By providing comparable performance with much lighter weight and lower material costs, a real revolution can be expected for many products in a broad range of market sectors, like the car components demonstrated in the project.
